LYRICS

THE SONGS

Lyrics by Peter with Lou's help, music by Lou with Peter's help. All songs © L&P Berryman.

  1. CHRISTMAS LETTER ©2004
Based on an actual Christmas letter that Peter and his wife Kristi sent out, but don't tell anybody.
  2. THE VULTURE ©2004
A Halloweeny klezmerlike bird waltz, this eventually comes to the defense of snoring.
  3. SOME DAYS ©2005
We all probably have times like this. Ours seem to happen on those days which contain the letter "y".
  4. HOMELESSNESS ©2004
Written for a transitional housing benefit concert in Madison. The next homeless face you see could be the surprised kisser in the mirror.
  5. HAVING BEEN DONE ©2005
Among our musical heroes are John Roberts and Tony Barrand, whose renditions of British folk songs inspired this chanty, but with an American ending.
  6. ACCORDION TO ZITHER ©2005
An alphabet song, influenced by Edward Gorey and Martha Stewart, and dedicated to inveterate home crafters and artistic recycling fanatics.
  7. DEM DEER ©2005
Penned on a twilight drive through mid Wisconsin, as a tool for keeping one's mind on watching out for Bambi.
  8. ELDERLYVILLE ©2005
The government making moves to destroy social security gave us visions of makeshift retirement shantytowns springing up in the near future.
  9. LEXICAL DUDE ©2004
We love jazz ballads by Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Billie Holiday, and try to imitate their harmony, style and structure in this nerd-love song.
  10. BUT I'M DOWN ©2004
This is a double bummer song, concerning not only being blue, but feeling guilty about it.
  11. BEST LAID PLANS ©2004
It only takes one prick to pop an otherwise perfect balloon. This was originally for four singers, written for a show with the great Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen.
  12. SOME BIRDS ©2005
Rewritten often over the years, this was kept alive by the encouragement of the incomparable singer and songwriter Anne Hills. With its current ending, she may regret it.
  13. DUST THE PIANO ©2005
In our families, tensions were relieved creatively. Here Lou plays the accordion like someone dusting the piano like someone putting out a fire.
  14. WAUBESA STREET ©2002
Warning: contains a mnemonic device. Peter made up this song while he was walking his dog Izzie. It's a song about Peter walking his dog Izzie.
  15. HOUSEHOLD FLUIDS ©2004
Have you ever walked through the bathroom, kitchen, and basement of your house, marveling at your containers of fluid? Some of them even rhyme.
  16. WE DON'T DO IT ©2003
It may be that the consequences of not accomplishing everything it is humanly possible to accomplish are mild. The two of us are in the forefront of this research.
